August 2024 Update
August was a month of both deep emotional reflection and personal growth for us. We spent three weeks in Ontario grieving the loss of Spencer's father, Brent Devolin, and honoring his memory in many special ways.
During this time, Elizabeth caught her first Canadian fish, and Spencer completed a triathlon in honor of his father, a testament to his strength and dedication. At Brent's funeral, Spencer performed his own music, and later, at the Celebration of Life, he paid tribute to his father with heartfelt performances.
Elizabeth was a constant source of support for Spencer and his family as they navigated this period of grief. Amidst it all, she remained dedicated to her studies, continually expanding her knowledge on how to support the human body. This month’s theme on digestive enzymes reflects her dedication to learning how enzymes impact overall health and vitality. With this new knowledge, she’s created fresh resources for her clients and enhanced the client experience in her health consultations.
Meanwhile, Spencer took on his biggest, most challenging painting project yet, pushing his limitations. Check out the photos below!
It’s been a month filled with love, resilience, and a commitment to growth, both personally and professionally.
In Loving Memory of
Brent Devolin
This is the speech Spencer created to honor his father at Brent’s funeral.
Dear Dad,
Thank you for my beautiful life. Thank you for being the man I needed, even when sometimes you were not the man that I wanted. Thank you for shaping me and supporting me, nurturing me for who I am and not simply who you thought I should be. Thank you for giving everything you had to give in this life and not holding back who you are from this world. We will always remember you. Thank you Dad
When I heard news of my father being admitted to the hospital I wondered what it all mean’t. I asked God if he would be returning to us. I was told that he would not. I sat with myself many times. Journaling, singing, sitting in silence. Digesting the experience. It has not all been easy, but I’m reminded there is always a silver lining. Sometimes we just need to find it.
Grief is a rollercoaster. Some days you’re sad. Some days you’re angry wishing things were different. And some days you’re overcome with bliss and tears remembering all of the incredible memories. I’m grateful to my family, friends and my partner Elizabeth for all of their support. It’s made this difficult time much more bearable. We are so fortunate to have one another.
When we lose someone special to us it causes us to take a pause. To think about what is most important in our lives. For me it made me think of family. The legacy of love and tradition that we carry in our hearts and pass down to one another. I look back at my life and see how lucky I am to be in a family that values one another so deeply. That vows to stick by one another even when we argue or disagree. I’m reminded that love is a choice and that there is no easy way, but there is a better way. One that does not simply serve ourselves but serves the collective. That has faith in our better nature. That brings out the best in our relationships and community. I believe that is my fathers legacy.
He has shown me through his example what beauty can be created from a lifetime of commitment and dedication. How many lives can be positively impacted when we show up through the good times and the hard. When we do the right thing even when it’s not the easy thing. And how we keep a clear conscience by sharing what's on our heart with consideration for others.
My father was not a perfect man. There were times when I resented him. But I have always known that he cared. I learned much from him. Equally from his strengths and his shortcomings. He has been my teacher in his life and now in his death. I will honor him and my own grief by allowing myself to feel everything this experience has to offer. Not to stay sad, feeling sorry for myself forever, but instead by taking the wisdom of who my father was to me and creating something meaningful in my life. Taking on the mantle of love, legacy and responsibility for what I believe is right just as he did. That is how I choose to honor my father.
Thank you.
